German Astronaut Plans to Throw a Party on the International Space Station

A party in space? German astronaut Matthias Maurer has big plans

German astronaut Matthias Maurer will travel to the International Space Station (ISS) on November 3 on the next SpaceX crew mission as part of NASA’s program. A few months after his arrival, he is planning a party with his colleagues. Maurer shared the details of the anticipated event in an interview with the Russian section of Deutsche Welle. Born in Sankt Wendel, Germany, Maurer remains one of the most prominent German astronauts in the European Space Agency.

The celebration will be dedicated to several events: On March 18, Maurer will celebrate his 52nd birthday. On the same day, the Russian Soyuz spacecraft will arrive at the ISS, and one of the American astronauts will set a record for stays in orbit.

“We’ll basically have three good reasons to celebrate these days. We’ll see what’s up there in order to throw a party. Probably loud music and non-alcoholic drinks, and the rest is our improvisation,” Maurer stated.

The astronaut will also be taking Christmas presents with him for his colleagues. He expects to receive a little surprise for his birthday, as well. Most of all he would enjoy a cherry cake, traditional for the Black Forest region of Germany. “But I don’t think it will be there,” Maurer joked.
